Hey, everyone! Long time, no see. Thank you for bearing with me while I took some time off and then transitioned into preparing for something very special and exciting…
We have a shorter inter-review today but trust me, this is HUGE! Our good friends in the band Some Ghosts have covered the song “Two Moons” by Cloud District, and I can't wait to tell you all about it. The song “Two Moons” by Cloud District was originally released on September 13th, 2024 (woah, that date sounds familiar to me for some reason, that's so crazy). I've already reviewed this song, if you'd like to read all about that, and the entire Cloud District EP “Proof of Life”, you can check that out HERE!(https://cdromrabbithole.wixsite.com/cd-rom-rabbit-hole/post/proof-of-life-by-cloud-district-inter-review)
Some Ghosts are an emo/alternative band from Bristol, PA. and I also have the privilege of reviewing their songs “Had It All” and “Sable”. If you'd like to learn more about them and what they do, you can read that HERE!
I think the two distinct styles of Some Ghosts and Cloud District complement each other nicely, in a somewhat odd way, but nothing so unbelievable that it would never work. Cloud District brings an atmospheric, spacey, extraterrestrial vibe to their indie-rock style, whereas Some Ghosts can seamlessly blend their darker, grittier, and hauntingly beautiful sound. Because I've already written my thoughts on Cloud District’s original performance of “Two Moons”, I don’t want to get too hung up on comparing these two versions; I'd much rather allow these to be two separate entities that are allowed to be their own individual pieces of art. However, I would love for you all to streak both versions on repeat and pick out all your favorite differences or alternate interpretations in the instrumentation. Anyway, Some Ghosts do a fantastic job at taking the source material and saying “what if Some Ghosts had written this song?” And like I said, I think there is a very good cross-over of vibes between the two bands that allows this to be a smooth transition opposed to a stark contrast sounding like an entirely different song. If you were familiar with Cloud District's version, you would absolutely hear Some Ghosts singing those words and immediately clock it. I really commend Some Ghosts on their ability to work so hard making this song perfectly encompasses their own unique sound, as if it could blend right in with any part of their discography. They really make it look (and sound) so easy, but I know in my heart this must have taken them so much time, effort, and energy to get it to this point. The production value is incredible as well, really every aspect is beautifully crafted and gives a lovely alternate perspective and interpretation to the iconic “Two Moons” by Cloud District!
So, we haven't yet addressed WHY Some Ghosts took on this challenge to cover a Cloud District song…well...
CD-ROM Rabbit Hole is celebrating our ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!! 🥳🎉🥂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And guess what…to celebrate, we are putting together a cover compilation album! This album features many artists that I have covered on this website, and they'll all be covering songs by other bands from my website! Some other covers to look forward to (but no limited to) are:
Dear Season covering “And It Feels” by Customer Service
Strangeness In Proportion covering “A Song For Bob” by PB&TAT
and GUTTER PEARL covering “For The Police” by Fuzzy Slippers
And the best part about all of this? We are donating ALL THE PROCEEDS! Every penny we make on this compilation will be donated to Rock To The Future. Their mission is to provide musical instruments and lessons to underprivileged/at-risk children in and around the Philadelphia area. I did A LOT of research when choosing an organization that I felt was worthy of our goals and values at CD-ROM, and I wanted to ensure that this money would go to a good place, instead of those slimy non-profits that use donations as tax write-offs and the founders are making millions of dollars a year. Yeah, we didn't want any of that shit. Rock To The Future is reliable, very community-focused, and does a lot of fantastic work. I'm very proud to be contributing to their mission and I am very appreciative for all the work they do. I would really love everyone to visit their website and read more about their organization. You can check that all out HERE! (https://rocktothefuture.org/)
This past year of CD-ROM Rabbit Hole has been such a great experience. This project was a way for me to take time away from directly focusing on my own music; I needed a change, a break, and I wanted to explore other avenues. Growing up, I was always writing. I wrote stories, comic books, songs, whatever I could write up on a silly old typewriter I found in my great-aunt's closet. Once I really started committing to my music, I found it increasingly hard to find the time to continue working on a variety of writing projects, and mainly just put all my eggs in the songwriting basket. I pretty consistently kept that up for around ten years, and after my album came out, I finally just wanted a breath of fresh air. I wanted to continue engaging with my community, and I wanted to keep up my writing chops, I didn't want to return to writing and have become rusty. But anyway, I will cut to the chase. I am so unbelievably grateful and amazed by how many incredible musicians have submitted their music and trusted my brand new, teeny tiny little review website to write something positive about their art. I am so blown away by the wide variety of talented and kind people I have come to meet because of this project. It has also forced me to develop my musical taste and be more open to different styles. A core value of CD-ROM is to find the positives in everything. The word “review” typically means to share an opinion, regardless of it being positive or negative. However, I always wanted to approach my reviews with less of a critiquing lens and more of a willing and eagerness to shine a spotlight on small creators that are pouring their hearts into this art and trying to share it with the universe. I think that's beautiful, and I have been met with so much warmth and support, I can't thank you all enough.
Our birthday is September 13th, and the compilation album will be released that day, exclusively on bandcamp. You can pre-order it now and immediately receive a download file for the cover of “Two Moons” by Some Ghosts. Purchase HERE!

Interview with Some Ghosts:
Hey guys! It's good to be back here chatting with you guys again.
First off, what were your first thoughts when I approached you with this idea to do a cover compilation album for the one year anniversary of CD-ROM Rabbit Hole?
Justin H: Our first thought was “let’s do it!”. We’ve always loved splits/comps where artists cover one another. We’ve discovered so many bands from projects like this, and the cherry on top is that the proceeds are going to a great cause that we deeply resonate with.
When looking over the roster of artists and songs to cover, what drew you to “Two Moons” by Cloud District? Were there any other songs you were considering? How did that entire process unfold?
Justin H: Every artist on the comp is awesome, but we wanted to choose an artist who we hadn’t interacted with before so it wouldn’t turn into a friends choosing friends situation.
Justin T and I were flabbergasted when we saw Cloud District’s name on the list. Their Summer Slam EP was on repeat for years while we were in our previous band, Everything I Lack. We had missed the release of Proof of Life, so we sat down and listened to it front to back. The second Two Moons started and the “You look so funny in your glasses” line hit we knew that was the song.
I think you guys created a perfect balance between utilizing your own style while still staying true to the original. Was there any conversation about how you wanted to approach this cover? Were there any disagreements about how you wanted this cover to sound?
Justin H: We had three different ideas for the cover. Our first jam session was closer to the original sound, with acoustic guitars and only really exploding into heavier guitars towards the end of the song. Then Joe and Justin T worked on it and jammed out a punkier straight forward vibe. There weren't necessarily disagreements, but we initially were on different pages of how far into left field we wanted to go with it. I remember pitching some tappy guitars and nonsense that just would’ve been too much. We ended up just sitting down in my studio and somehow landed on the ambient guitar intro and then moved forward with the heavier vision from there.
What was the hardest part about covering this song? Did you have a lot of trouble trying to get it right or did it all come pretty naturally to you?
Justin H: The hardest part was definitely just trying to do it justice. Cloud District obviously put a ton of effort into the song, and it’s emotionally devastating. We didn’t want to put something out that didn’t come close to the emotional weight of the song.
If any band in the world could cover one of your songs, who would you want it to be?
Justin H: Fuzzy Slippers. (they’re covering Sable on the comp so you should go listen to that ASAP)
I would be so happy to hear anyone cover one of our songs (as long as they're not a terrible person.)
What cover from this compilation are you most excited to hear?
Justin H: Super excited for everything, but Gutter Pearl covering Fuzzy Slippers has us geeked rn.
Thank you guys so much, this cover is incredible, you guys rule, hope we can talk again soon! Thank you!!!

Interview with Cloud District:
What's up, guys? It's like a family reunion here! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions! Unfortunately, simply because of the way numbers work, not every band was able to be covered this year; were you surprised when you found out someone was going to cover “Two Moons”? What were your first thoughts?
Anthony: Two Moons might be my favorite CD song at the moment. So very excited to see how it came out (its so so good!) #2moonsgang
Brian: i’m similarly fond of Two Moons, and my first thought was excitement that someone would want to learn one of our songs.
Nothing will ever top the original, but I think Some Ghosts came as close as they possibly could! How do you all feel about it? Are you pleased with how it turned out?
Anthony: it rips 🤘
Brian: rips! really like how they made it their own.
If any band in the world could cover one of your songs, who would you want it to be?
Anthony: sunn 0))) covering Cuddle Puddle
Brian: I’d like to hear Bob Dylan take on Vaporwave Nightmare as a 12 bar blues.
Of course, everyone is busy with life, I completely understand that not every band featured on my website was able to contribute a cover song. If you guys WERE able to do a cover, what song would you have done for this comp?
Brian: I am horribly indecisive, and I wouldn’t be able to choose now but I would have liked to do something that was outside of our normal wheel house.
What cover from this compilation are you most excited to hear?
Anthony: The hit song “Two Moons” as performed by Some Ghosts
Brian: I mean… it’s really hard to top hearing your own song covered…
Thank you guys again for making time for me, you are always super appreciated!
